Where The Wind Takes Us
Chapter 1
Hello, there! For the last few weeks, I’ve been wrestling with an essay that just won't come together. So instead of forcing it, I'm doing something different—I'm sharing the first chapter of another Unfinished project that's been quietly asking me to be born: my children's book, Where The Wind Takes Us.
It’s a rough draft but it felt right to start sharing. I’ve also added some reflection prompts at the end, which carry the story’s themes of belonging, freedom, and authenticity.
Enjoy!
Chapter 1 - Libertee
“I exist to please and appease To make dreams come true!” That’s why Red was at Libertee Or at least that’s all she knew. At the Libertee Party Shop, where Red spends her days You’ll find balloons of all sizes in endless displays They blanket the ceiling and line every wall A sea of colors that captivates all. Every time the door opens In comes a gentle breeze The balloons start to dance Setting in motion their shimmering strings. Libertee has something for every celebration! Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, Baby showers, Christmas, and New Year’s too, Whatever the occasion, There’s something perfect for you. As people of all ages come and go Red watches them browse the aisles, hoping for a hello. The sparkle in their eyes when they find just the right thing That kind of magic was Red’s true dream. Through the display glass, at the front of the shop, Red sees a world she longs to be a part of: The kids all play, their balloons bobbing above The wind never tires; it tugs and blows Yet they never let those shiny strings go. “Someday it will be me! I’ll be someone’s special thing. I’ll be a part of the party while someone holds my string!” 🎈
Reflection Prompts:
Red believes being chosen by someone at the shop will bring her safety, belonging and a sense of fulfilled purpose.
What’s tied to your string?
What person, achievement, or role have you convinced yourself you need in order to feel whole or safe? Describe what you imagine life will be like once you finally have it.
"I exist to please and appease."
If this is a narrative you’re familiar with, when did you first learn it? Who taught it to you, and how has it shaped the way you move through the world?
Red thinks the wind is dangerous.
What have you been taught to fear that might actually be your path to freedom?
“If I didn’t fear _______ , I would_______.”

Oh my goodness it’s soooo nice to see Red again!!!! 🎈 yay!!
